Day 4 - 12/3/09

Today in small groups students were asking smarter questions and weren't looking towards me for answers to their problems. Effectively, the students were solving their own problems without my assistance. Although, a few students still needed assistance and I reminded them of a technique that John Hagelin told us to use in small groups.

1.) Read Aloud
2.) Tell someone in your own words.
3.) Write it in your own words.

Usually, when reminded of this, students would be able to get through summary points very easily.

  1. I assume this means "read the question aloud, tell someone the answer to the question, and then write down the answer you just gave verbally." You could also try, 1) one person asks the question, 2) the other person answers the question to the best of his or her ability, 3) the first person comments on the answer given, adding detail, challenging, or reinforcing the answer, 4) short (limited in time) discussion, and 5) both students write down their best answer.

This is an example of breaking a learning task into smaller steps and using the social environment to support learning.
